Fall Chilis 11-11-2023

Festivals in the fall are a “must attend” attraction in Northwestern Indiana. They are a chance to socialize and learn from your neighbors who always have a special skill. These beautiful chilis, for example, were grown and dried by a neighbor in Porter County.

Indian Customs 11-09-2023

Living close to Pottawattomie Park allows us to be educated on Indian customs. Pottawatomie park was established and developed on land once inhabited by the Potawatomi Indians and is believed to be the site of Potawatomi “council ground” in LaPorte County Indiana. During the early spring there is always an opportunity to visit nearby attractions to learn about the fur trade and Indian rituals.

Culver Candy 11-08-2023

Old time shops displayed candy for all the little children to feel welcome and to entice their parents to come on in! We loved our visit to Culver Indiana where the candy shop reminded us of days gone by

Farmland 11-07-2023

When the light in the sky falls to the horizon during harvest, farmers allow the deer to guard their harvesters from thieves. In November, we always hope the weather has been good enough in Indiana to have completed the outdoor chores in October.

Orr Lake Mansion 11-06-2023

Being relatively new to the area in LaPorte County Indiana and having the most knowledgeable guide of the area, my ears perked up and listened with excitement when stories about Mansions and murders passed the lips of a native resident.

Orr Lake Mansion was built in 1875 by William Orlando Orr, son of State Senator-Brigadier General Joseph Orr. Supposedly, the house is two story with more than 5,500 square feet of living space. The best part of the story was when I heard it once had a private roller rink. I would have to visit to confirm that fact.

Wasp in the Window 11-03-2023

Looking out our window into the woods, my view changed from far sighted to near. Caught between the window and the screen was a very unlucky wasp. “Mr. Wasp wouldn’t you be happier foraging upon a flower?”

Boots on the Sand 11-02-2023

While I sit with my fancy boots on the shores of Lake Michigan in Indiana with my thoughts drifting off to far away places, our soldiers have their boots in the sand at far away places dreaming of home.

The Stare 11-01-2023

Horses are a special kind of animal with very expressive body language. We stopped to say “Hello” to this fella when our for a Sunday drive. He clearly wants to know why we are on his road.

Pink on Lake Michigan 10-31-2023

The Weibolt-Rostone House built for the 1933 World’s Fair was “trucked” across Lake Michigan where it found it’s home on the shores in LaPorte County Indiana. The house was made of Rostone, a building material developed in Lafayette, Indiana using limestone, shale, and alkali.
